On September 27, 2022, in a continuation of PICNA’s initiative to provide diversity training to law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level, PICNA President Chaudhry Sadiq provided a presentation entitled “Understanding Islam and Muslims” at FBI Chicago, one of the Bureau’s largest field offices. The presentation was well attended by over 250 FBI employees in-person and via videoconference from FBI headquarters and various other field offices across the country. The attendees included division executives, Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts, and other professional staff.
The presentation informed attendees on the core beliefs of Islam as well as the national and global demographic makeup of the Muslim community. The presentation also emphasized the common Abrahamic heritage shared by the world’s three major monotheistic religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and highlighted Islamic teachings from the Quran and Hadith compelling Muslims to be stalwart advocates of justice, goodwill and peaceful coexistence. Another message emphasized throughout the presentation was the central importance of language in Islamic tradition, which necessitated the correct understanding and application of frequently misused words such as "Jihad".
The event was coordinated by Diversity & Inclusion committee leader Sherry Myart and Near and Middle East Advisory Committee Chair Rameez Khan. The event coordinators conveyed their appreciation for the presentation and expressed the desire to provide similar presentations at other FBI field offices in the near future.
